We had a double-header in the City of Escondido this weekend. Our JV/Frosh wrestlers went to Escondido High School for their JV Duals, while our varsity team competed just down the road at Orange Glen High School.

The JV squad battled back and forth to finish 5th in the tournament. For many wrestlers these were their first matches ever!

Our varsity guys had a strong showing with only a half squad and finished with 5 placers including 4 finalists and 3 champions out of only 6 competitors. Among the champions was Gustavo Matadamas who made his return to competition for the first time this season to upset a returning Masters placer in an exciting overtime finals match.  Great weekend for the 30th ranked team in CA.

It was a long weekend full of great competition at the Reno Tournament of Champions.  Even with only half of the weight classes filled, Carlsbad managed to score enough points to finish 21st in one of the toughest tournaments in the nation.  Chance Eskam earned All-American status for his second place finish at heavyweight.  Zach Arsenault took home a 6th place medal at 195lbs.  Finally, James Murphy finished 8th at 182lbs.

It was a great showing for the team and now the wrestlers have a few days to recover.  Next practice will be this Thursday (12/26) at 5:00pm for all levels!  Happy Holidays!

It was a busy weekend for Carlsbad Wrestling.  Varsity traveled to La Costa Canyon for the Jimmy Hamada Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday.  Those who did not wrestle on the second day went to Mission Hills for their varsity tournament.  Finally, our freshmen had a great day on Saturday at Rancho Buena Vista High School.

Varsity had an extra surprise as Hall of Fame Coach Mark Nelson stopped by LCC to see the medal round and finals.  Coach Nelson was the first head coach of Carlsbad Wrestling and coached the team, as well as taught at CHS, for 34 years.   Coach Nelson retired from coaching in 2005 and then from teaching in 2006.  He is still Carlsbad Wrestling’s biggest fan.

Here are the results from the second weekend of competition:

Varisty at LCC:

170lbs – Jake Heene – 3rd
182lbs – James Murphy – 3rd
195lbs – Zach Arsenault – 3rd
